Think Safety
Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind when you are on the move!
Before you get more active talk to your health care professional.
It might be a good idea to talk to your family doctor about your new physical activity goals, especially if you are moving from inactivity to activity. Your doctor knows your health history and can best guide you towards a personalized plan to get you moving.
Know your environment.
With any activity, it is always best to know your environment.
When walking, running and rollerblading, pick a safe route to walk that has nice even surfaces that won't trip you up. Without sidewalks, always travel against the flow of traffic. And always watch for cars pulling in and out of driveways.
When cycling, plan your route for a smooth surface, traffic levels that you are comfortable with and an enjoyable ride. And always ride with traffic flow.
When setting out for a game of football, soccer, baseball, etc. always check the field to make sure it is free of gopher holes and broken glass.
When in or near the water, know the local water, for example, how deep it is and the current. Buddy up with someone you know and trust. Wear a lifejacket when boating and stay within the buoys. Always keep children within arms reach near water and always wear lifejackets.
Talk to the experts.
There are so many great resources out there to help. Talk to bike shop staff about proper fit for your bike, bags to carry your stuff safely and choosing, fitting and wearing a bike helmet and gloves. You can also take training to improve your skills. Speak to the Red Cross or Life Saving Society of Manitoba about learning to swim or boating or boarding on the water.
Practice, practice, practice.
The better your skills in any activity the less likely you are to injure yourself.
Warm-up and cool-down.
When walking, jogging or running use the warm-ups of gentle walking and gentle stretching for the ankle, knee and hip. To cool-down do some more stretches or walk for a bit rather than stopping cold turkey.
Wear the gear.
When on foot, wear clothing that allows comfortable movement and that makes you visible in the day or night. When cycling, always, always wear your helmet. Dress to be highly visible, fluorescent in the day, reflective at night. Stay 1 meter from the curb and be extra careful at intersections. If you have stuff to carry, carry it on your bike, not on your back.
Be sure to protect yourself from the sun. Wear a broad brimmed hat, or a bike helmet with a peak. And use sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher. Remember to reapply often.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Avoid dehydration - drink before you're thirsty!
Listen to your body.
Let your body be your guide. It is okay to push yourself sometimes, but remember to build gradually, listen to your body and be patient!
